Join celebrated textile artist Susie Vickery, on a journey of story-telling through embroidery and puppet making.
Choose one, two or three 2-day workshops, taking you from portrait to 2D puppet, then to articulate your story in an embroidered picture.
Susie Vickery is known for her ingenious story-telling through the crafts of embroidery, textiles, puppetry, costume design and animation. Just to spend time with Susie, hearing her tales of travels and projects far and wide is a delight. We are fortunate that she is close at hand in WA, and so generous in sharing her skills and inventive designs.
Susie has designed three workshops for Maker&Smith that can be ‘stitched’ together for a fulsome experience or if you can only attend one, you will still reap the rich benefits of her teaching and inventive ideas.
Each of the 2-day workshops take place over a weekend at Camelot in Perth, with enough time to practice or prepare new work for the next one.
Please note we have deliberately chosen venue partner Camelot for these workshops where we can more than adequately adhere to ‘COVID Safety Guidelines Phase 4’. (Scroll down to read more about this.)
Embroidered Story-Telling with Susie Vickery
- Embroider a Portrait :: Saturday 22 + Sunday 23 August.
- Create a 2D Jointed Puppet :: Saturday 26 + Sunday 27 September.
- Articulate an Embroidered Story :: Saturday 17 + Sunday 18 October.
Early Bird Tickets:
Early bird ticket prices of $220 +GST per 2-day workshop will expire on Sunday 9 August at 11:59pm.
Full price tickets will then publish at $250 +GST per 2-day workshop.
Please note: Eventbrite ticketing fees are additional.
Places are limited to 10 people per workshop; booking is essential.
Your ticket price includes:
- Materials: a pack suitable for each workshop, such as fabric, threads, needles, embroidery hoops, pencils and other key materials.
- Morning and afternoon tea. (Please bring your own lunch.)
What to bring:
Each workshop will have specific requirements, which we will email you about in good time before the workshop, but for each we ask you to bring:
- Thread clippers or small scissors
- Your favourite embroidery needles
- A thimble, if you use one
- Any embroidery threads that you love
- (… a water bottle and your lunch).
Some stitching and drawing experience will be handy, but an enthusiasm to grasp new design, textile and construction skills – and an excellent sense of humour – is all you really need.
How long are the workshop days?
Workshops begin at 10am prompt. We recommend arriving at 9:30am to register and settle yourself (please don’t come earlier!). There will be a one hour lunch break around 12.30pm and we conclude the day at 4:00pm.
Where are the workshops?
Maker & Smith is pleased to partner with Camelot Arts in Mosman Park, Perth. You will find us in the ‘Reception Room’ of this beautiful art deco venue, previously known as Memorial Hall and celebrating its centenary in October 2020.

What are the COVID-19 precautions?
We will operate according to the Western Australian guidelines at the time. The workshop takes place in a large, ventilated room to provide plenty of space for physical distancing; masks will be provided for those who do not bring one and hand sanitiser will be on hand. We ask that you notify us and do not attend if you are ill and, if this is the case, we will negotiate fair and reasonable terms.
If COVID-19 impacts the presentation of a workshop, we will notify you of the changes, and will offer reasonable terms. If Maker & Smith has to cancel a workshop a full refund will be made and reasonable advance notice will be given. Read our Covid-19 Response.
What are my transport/parking options for getting to and from the event?
Free public car parking is available in the surrounding streets of Solomon and Lochee. (https://goo.gl/maps/Zct9EtUTs712).
A 15 minute walk from Mosman Park train station.
And a short walk from the 107 bus route.
Is the venue Accessible?
There is wheelchair access. Contact us or Camelot if you have any queries.
Where can I buy a coffee and lunch?
We will provide plunger coffee and leaf tea (with fab locally made snacks) for morning and afternoon teas. If you need a barista coffee there are several options nearby. Please bring your own lunch or purchase from a nearby cafe or take-away.
The Camelot Cafe will open from September, Wok’n’Roll across the road is a good spot for fabulous sushi and wok meals, as well as a quick coffee. Elsewhere in ‘Mossie Park’ there are several great options; we recommend Bittersweet, Good Things, Simply Beautiful Biscuits, Belin and Gill St Cafe.
Photography
Yes, you can take phone photos during the workshops, but if you publish or post to social media you must credit Susie Vickery and Maker & Smith.
By enrolling in a class you automatically give permission to be photographed. Photos may be used by Maker & Smith for promotional purposes. If you’d prefer not to permit, please advise the Maker & Smith representative at the event.
