Njalikwa Chongwe is a ceramic artist based in South Fremantle in Western Australia.
His studio, Zinongo, is close to the Indian Ocean, and the coastal influence flows strongly through his work and is fused with themes drawn from his African heritage.
His pieces display striking colours and tactile tones prevalent in these two influences. To convey this he embraces techniques found in traditional Asian Ceramics (Japanese Rakuware and high fired Chinese stoneware) as well as practices used by traditional African potters. The result is the creation of ceramics born from the convergence of many cultures….. literally ‘a melting pot’.
Njalikwa also provides technical support and teaches short courses in ceramics at North Metropolitan TAFE.
Njalikwa (and Zinongo Studio) welcomes commissions, and sometimes delivers workshops.
