Be the first to enjoy the next edition of the ‘Makers Film Festival (MFF23)’, a program of short films dedicated to craft on the big screen

An international selection of short films about craft, produced by Maker & Smith in Western Australia.

We are thrilled to announce the launch of the second iteration of the Makers’ Film Festival, MFF23. This year’s program is jam-packed with 17 short films selected from submissions from Australia, New Zealand, and beyond. The premiere will be at our favourite cinema in West Perth –  The Backlot on Thursday 4 May 2023.

MFF23 will premiere in Australia on Thursday 4 May at The Backlot. Book now.

In the following months, the films will tour around Australia, New Zealand and internationally – venues and dates to be announced.

The two-part program includes a wonderful diversity of films from animated shorts by audience favourites Tjanpi Desert Weavers to a charming survey of craft from Kazakhstan, and practice insights about casting glass, ceramics, basket weaving and public art. Don’t miss this captivating collection of films from talented artisans, craft artists and filmmakers.

This year, the Maker & Smith selection panel was joined by artist Susie Vickery, whose film ‘Peregrinations of a Citizen Botanist’ won the Favourite Film of the 2021 edition of the festival, and John Collee, internationally renowned screen writer.

You don’t have to be a ‘maker’ to enjoy these films. As the stories are intrinsically about connections, the power of the hand, tactility and our most basic human instinct to shape materials.

Ranging from just 60 seconds to 9 minutes, there’s plenty to inspire.
